Bivalve Purification Courses
Below are course information summaries for the three new Bivalve Purification Courses
Bivalve Purification Operations - a half day theory only course that provides an in-depth review of the legal, biological and operational framework that a bivalve purification and despatch centre operates in. The course is suitable for all centre staff including management and operatives and will over the course of the four hour long programme provide the participants with a greater understanding of their role in providing safer seafood. This course is approved by the Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland and will lead (by way of a short examination) to a nationally recognised certificate endorsed by REHIS, Seafish and the Seafood Training Academy.
Bivalve Purification Management - a two day practical course that builds upon the theory delivered in the operations course through two days of guided practical sessions. Participants are taken through a modified purification cycle using industry standard purification equipment and are instructed in the use of essential measuring and monitoring equipment, and the collection of key biological and operational data. This course is recognised by Seafish and participants are awarded a Seafish certificate.
Bivalve Purification Inspections - a half day theory only course developed for Environmental Health Officers and others with a responsibility for inspecting and auditing Bivalve Purification and Despatch Centres (BVPDC). The purpose of this course is, through presentation and discussion, to develop a consensus amongst the participants of what it is reasonable, practicable and possible to expect of BVPDC and their staff in the commercial purification of bivalve molluscs for human consumption. During the programme we explore those issues that must be addressed to ensure safer seafood while exploding some of the myths and 'red herrings' of food safety audits. The expected outcome of the programme is an understanding by EHOs of what represents a safe system of work that is commercially viable, ensuring that inspection recommendations are neither too harsh or too lenient, but are appropriate. This course is recognised by Seafish and participants are awarded a Seafish certificate.
These two short theory programmes and the longer practical programme can be put together to suit the needs of particular groups. They can be delivered over a period of time, or as a single block depending upon need.
